Description

Turned an older Redmi Note 3 phone into a dedicated satnav, however, I didn't like various phone holders and wanted more robust, yet very discrete (quickly to put away without having much visible from the holder/stand) and designed a magnetic stand. Designed the center panel of a Mazda3 to know where the 'structs' are so I could glue magnets to it in the least intrusive manner. And this allowed me to design the case for the phone to exactly mimic the shape of the dash, yet give me exactly the angle for the phone I want. The source files are parametric so it's possible to alter it quickly for different phones/shapes and have different angles of the folder. The demonstration video below shows how the stand snaps exactly to its correct place and is held pretty firmly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xig4d7uSoXc The back of the phone case is held together with M3 screws which go into M3 brass threaded inserts. It's using 9x40mm square magnet together with a 12mm radial magnet. To charge the phone I use magnetic USB cables from banggood: Marjay 3A Type C Micro USB Magnetic https://www.banggood.com/Marjay-3A-Type-C-Micro-USB-Magnetic-LED-Indicator-Data-Cable-For-Huawei-P30-Pro-Mate-30-Mi9-7A-6Pro-9Pro-S10+-Note10-p-1591098.html?rmmds=myorder&cur_warehouse=CN&ID=224533111 And I didn't want the cable go through the front of the bottom of the central console and didn't want to have them in my way, so they had to come from the top central panel. Made housing for USB connector which does stay almost flush with the dash and when it's needed it's easy to pull it out with the phone (as it has the rest of the magnetic connector, so it will pull it from my casing).
